Privacy Fence Installation in Elizabeth City, NC
Most people who call us are not calling to ask about a material. They are calling because a new house went up behind them, or because the road got busier, or because they would like to sit on their own patio without an audience. That is a privacy fence, and there are two sensible ways to build one here.
Wood
The most affordable way to screen a large yard, and the warmest looking. Board-on-board gives a solid screen with no gaps as the boards weather; shadowbox alternates the boards either side of the rail, so it screens the view, lets storm wind pass through rather than pushing against the whole fence, and looks finished from both sides. That last point avoids an awkward conversation with a neighbor. More on wood fencing
Vinyl
Costs more to put in and asks for nothing afterwards. No staining, no rot, no rust streaks, and it holds its color in the salt air. If you expect to be in the house for a long time, the maintenance you never do tends to outweigh the difference in price. More on vinyl fencing
Height, and what you are allowed
Six feet is the usual height for a privacy fence and is what most people want. Two things can limit it. Municipalities commonly restrict fence height in front yards and at corner lots where a tall fence would block sightlines at a junction, and if you are in a neighborhood with a homeowners association there may be rules about height, material and color.
The things people forget
- Gates. Where will you bring a mower, a boat or a trailer through? Wide double gates are far easier to allow for now than to retrofit.
- The property line. Worth being certain about before the posts go in, not after.
- Drainage and ditches. A solid fence across a drainage line will dam it. There are ways around this and we will point them out on the walk-through.
